The most critical—and often manual—handoff in manufacturing is between the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) digital twin and the Manufacturing Execution System (MES). AI integration for PLM and MES focuses on automating this bidirectional data flow. Key integration surfaces include:
- PLM to MES: Automating the generation and validation of work instructions, routings, and bill-of-process from the PLM-managed EBOM and MBOM.
- MES to PLM: Feeding back as-built data, including serial numbers, component lot traceability, quality non-conformances, and machine sensor readings, to update the PLM digital twin.
- Exception Handling: Using AI agents to monitor for deviations (e.g., a substitute part used on the line) and automatically trigger an Engineering Change Order (ECO) in systems like Siemens Teamcenter or PTC Windchill for review.
