A watchdog timer is a hardware or software timer that resets a system if the main program fails to periodically service it, providing a critical fault-tolerance mechanism in embedded robotic systems. It acts as an independent monitor, requiring the primary control software to send a periodic "kick" or "pet" signal to prove it is functioning correctly. If this signal is not received before the timer expires, the watchdog assumes a software fault—such as a deadlock, infinite loop, or crash—and initiates a system reset or a predefined recovery routine to restore safe operation.
