Functional Safety (ISO 26262) is an international standard for the safety lifecycle of electrical and electronic systems in production automobiles. It provides a risk-based framework to manage hazards, specifying requirements for development processes, safety management, and product validation. The core objective is to achieve and verify an Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) for each function, from initial concept through decommissioning. This systematic approach is critical for safety-critical components like braking, steering, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
