This product-centric approach treats data as a first-class output, shifting responsibility from a central data team to the domain experts who understand the data best.

A Data Domain is a logical boundary aligned with a specific business area or capability, such as 'Customer,' 'Inventory,' or 'Finance.' In a Data Mesh, these domains are the primary unit of ownership and accountability. Each domain team is responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of its Data Products, including their quality, security, and governance. This decentralized structure ensures that data management is performed by those with the deepest contextual understanding, moving away from a monolithic, centralized data platform.

Federated Computational Governance is the model for decentralized control in a Data Mesh. Instead of a top-down, centralized governance body, a federated team composed of domain representatives and platform engineers defines global interoperability standards—such as data product schemas, discovery protocols, and security policies. These standards are then embedded into the self-serve data platform as automated, computational policies. This ensures global consistency and discoverability while empowering domains with local autonomy.

The Self-Serve Data Platform is the underlying infrastructure layer that enables domain teams to build, deploy, and manage their Data Products efficiently. A Data Contract is a formal, machine-readable agreement between a data producer (a domain team) and its consumers. It explicitly defines the schema, semantics, quality guarantees (e.g., completeness, freshness), and evolution policies of a Data Product. Contracts are versioned and enforced by the platform, preventing breaking changes and ensuring reliable consumption. They are a critical mechanism for decoupling domains, enabling autonomous product evolution while maintaining ecosystem-wide interoperability and trust.

A Data Lakehouse is a modern, open data architecture that combines the key benefits of data lakes and data warehouses. It provides:

• Low-cost, flexible object storage (like a data lake) for raw and processed data.
• ACID transactions and schema enforcement (like a data warehouse) for reliability.
• Support for diverse workloads: BI, SQL analytics, data science, and real-time applications. This architecture is often the preferred storage and processing layer for a Data Mesh implementation, as it supports the decentralized creation and consumption of Data Products across various analytical paradigms.
