The core pain point is renewable intermittency. Grid operators face a daily dilemma: when the sun shines and the wind blows, they risk overloading the network, forcing them to curtail (waste) clean energy and pay generators for power they can't use. Conversely, during a dunkelflaute (a period of low wind and solar), they must scramble to fire up expensive, polluting peaker plants. This volatility creates financial waste, operational risk, and slows the clean energy transition.
