Proof of Stake (PoS) is a consensus mechanism for distributed networks where validators are chosen to create new blocks and validate transactions based on the amount of cryptocurrency they have staked, or locked, as collateral. This stake acts as a financial guarantee, incentivizing honest participation. The selection process often uses a combination of the size of the stake and other factors like coin age or a Verifiable Random Function (VRF) to ensure fairness and security, replacing the energy-intensive computational races of Proof of Work (PoW).
