Security Information and Event Management (SIEM)

The process of enriching internal event data with external context about known threats to improve detection accuracy and provide attack attribution.

• Indicators of Compromise (IoCs): SIEMs consume feeds containing malicious IP addresses, domains, file hashes, and malware signatures.
• Contextual Enrichment: When an internal event matches an external IoC (e.g., a connection to a known command-and-control server), the alert is automatically enriched with threat actor names, campaign details, and recommended actions.
• Automated Blocking: Can integrate with firewalls or endpoints to automatically block traffic from malicious IPs identified in threat feeds.

Provides the tools for security analysts to investigate alerts, understand the scope of an incident, and gather evidence. This is the observability function for security.

• Timeline Reconstruction: Allows an analyst to pivot from an alert to see all related user and entity behavior (UEBA) before and after the event.
• Search & Query: Powerful indexed search across all normalized logs, often using a query language similar to SQL or Lucene.

The evolution of SIEM into Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR). This function enables predefined, automated workflows to contain and remediate threats without waiting for human intervention.

The disciplined practice of proactively injecting failures into a system in controlled experiments to test and improve resilience. In observability, it validates monitoring and alerting.

• Process: Hypothesize about a system's behavior, inject a fault (e.g., kill an agent, induce network latency), and observe the outcome.
• SIEM/Observability Role: Chaos experiments verify that the SIEM and observability stack correctly detect, alert, and provide diagnostic data for the induced failure modes.
