The integration connects two core systems: the Learning Management System (LMS)—Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, or Brightspace—and the Library Services Platform (LSP) or discovery layer—such as Ex Libris Alma, OCLC WorldShare, or EBSCO Discovery Service. The AI layer acts as a middleware agent, using the LMS's REST APIs and LTI 1.3 standard to embed itself as a tool within assignment modules, discussion boards, and content pages. It then orchestrates authenticated calls to library APIs (e.g., EDS API, Primo VE) to search licensed databases, open-access repositories, and institutional collections. Key data objects passed include the course context, user role (student/instructor), and research topic or citation need, enabling the AI to operate within the appropriate access rights and curricular scope.
